Monteith Husbandry

You may be wondering how husbandry goes with taxidermy.  Well it really doesn’t.  One of the goals of my family is to instill a hard work and business ethic in my children.  Therefore, I’m involving them in taxidermy and in raising animals.  I think it is important for all of us to realize where our food comes from and to also know that how you raise animals influences the quality of meat.

We raise KuneKune pigs to provide high quality meat for our family and friends.  KuneKune pigs are sometimes also known as pasture pigs because they can happily graze forages rather than only grain.  This type of grazing increases the nutrient density of the meat while also allowing the pigs roam around and find what they want to eat.  We rotationally graze our pigs during the growing season and then feed them hay during the winter.  They are supplementally fed non-GMO grains although it is very limited.

KuneKune pigs also make the best pets.  They are known for their demeanor and gentleness, which is something I can attest too.  My kids are constantly around our pigs, including the boars and sows.  They are very kind and gentle and easy to raise.

If you are interested in purchasing a pig to raise for yourself or to butcher, please give us a call and we will put you on our list.  We typically have piglets available to sell in the months of May and September.  The pigs for butchering are available seasonally.
